5 Things to Take Care of After Moving into an Apartment

Whether it’s your first time living on your own or you’ve moved to several different apartments over the years, moving somewhere new is an exciting but stressful time. Take a moment to slow down and make sure you’ve checked everything off your to-do list. Here are five things to take care of after moving into a new apartment.

Complete Your Move-In Inspection Checklist

Once you get the keys to your rental unit, it’s tempting to dive straight into unpacking, decorating, and getting settled. However, before you even open the first box, you should complete the move-in inspection checklist your landlord gives you. This form is your official proof of the apartment’s condition upon move-in. It prevents you from being responsible for any existing damage when you move out, so it’s worth taking your time when completing this form.

Set Up Utilities

A few weeks before moving day, you should have transferred the utilities at your new address into your name. That way, everything works when you walk in the door. If you forgot to do this, it’s not too late! Simply call each utility individually and open an account. You’ll also need to shut off the utilities at your old address to avoid being double-billed. Be sure to clarify with your landlord which utilities, if any, are included in your rental. You won’t have to worry about setting up any of those.

Update Your Address

You should have changed your address with the US Postal Service before moving day arrived. This will forward any mail sent to your old address for the next year. Now that the move is complete, the final step is to update your address with your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, school, work, shopping sites, and anywhere else that sends you mail.

Obtain or Update Your Renter’s Insurance

Your landlord may require you to get renter’s insurance. Even if not, this coverage provides great peace of mind. Basic policies protect your belongings from theft, fire, flood, mold, and other unexpected events. Because it only covers your possessions and not the building itself, renter’s insurance is much cheaper than homeowner’s insurance. In fact, plans start at around $10 per month.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

You may not become best friends with your neighbors, but it’s wise to introduce yourself and build a rapport. This way, you’ll feel comfortable asking to borrow a cup of sugar or get help carrying groceries up the stairs of your building.
