Lakewood Texas

Historic Treasure near White Rock Lake

Historic homes don’t always come to mind when you think of the DFW area because Dallas is ever-changing and building new developments. But there is a gem of an area known as Lakewood that encompasses several historically significant neighborhoods in the East Dallas area called Lakewood, which sits adjacent to White Rock Lake.

It developed in the early 20th century and includes Junius Heights historic district, Lakewood Heights, Mockingbird Meadows, and Wilshire Heights, among others. These neighborhoods have a plethora of architecturally significant homes and some of the most beautiful family-friendly communities.

Are you looking for a touch of Lake Life? With White Rock Lake in your backyard, you will not have to go far to enjoy your favorite water sports. White Rock Lake offers a variety of active and passive activity options and is one of the best places to experience nature and wildlife in an urban setting.

Lakewood is close to everything, and one beautiful attraction is the Dallas Arboretum. A great place to spend an afternoon with friends or family enjoying the beautiful gardens. Four major festivals each year bring seasonal flowers and family-friendly events to the conservatory. Dallas Blooms runs for six weeks in March and April, featuring more than 500,000 spring bulbs and 100,000 pansies, violas, and poppies. May Flowers is a month-long event with some 80,000 spring blooming annuals. Autumn at the Arboretum is an eight-week festival with a mix of summer and fall flowers alongside an enormous pumpkin village with over 90,000 pumpkins and gourds. At the same time, Holiday at the Arboretum starts the day after Thanksgiving and features attractions such as nativity scenes and nutcracker collections.

The Lakewood Theater of Dallas has served as a symbolic focal point of East Dallas since its construction in 1938. The art deco theater—the oldest single-screen theater in Dallas—has stayed true to its roots, even though it has experienced several renovations and suffered hail damage in a freak storm. A great place to start an evening out on the town.

All this sightseeing is making you thirsty. Time to stop at the White Rock Alehouse & Brewery in the arboretum village. This craft beer brewery has an extensive collection of locally brewed beers besides their own house varieties of beers. It is a great casual spot to grab a bite and have a nice cold beer.

Ready for some shopping? We are always up for shopping in this unique residential area. So, let’s head over to Hillside Village. We cannot end this blog without discussing a great place to find something sweet to eat. We have shopped, walked, and eaten all around Lakewood; now, let’s have that great cup of coffee and pastry. SusiesCakes has something for everyone; with their sweet array of cakes, cupcakes, pies, and cookies, this is the place to have it all except a table to sit and enjoy a cup of joe. So let’s move over to  White Rock Coffee for just that. White Rock Coffee offers a large assortment of coffee drinks, treats, and sandwiches. This neighborhood gem should not be missed and is definitely a place you want to make your regular spot on a Saturday afternoon.
